In pursuit for matters of climate Justice as a key thematic area in Lamu Women Alliance (LAWA) in partnership with  Akina mama wa Afrika (AMwA) under the auspices of Voices for Climate Action ( VCA) Today on 13th of August 2024, LAWA had a meeting with the governor of Lamu county Issa Timmany at his office in Mokowe Lamu county. This meeting focused on matters of women for climate Justice in Lamu and other thematic areas covered by LAWA.

In response to matters of climate Justice, the monitoring and Evaluation team for Financing local -led Climate Action program in Lamu County ( FLLOCA) led by Anthony Mbuthia was present in the meeting and explained that as a county they have put in place measures to ensure that women in Lamu county are at Frontline in addressing matters of climate Justice and that FLLOCA has ensured a gender-responsive budget.

Madam Raya Famau who is also the CEO and founder of Lamu Women Alliance explained to the governor on matters of violence against women and girls which is on the rise in Lamu County.

She explained further stating that there have been situations whereby as an organization they had to step up to help even young boys who had been sodomized.

Madam Raya explained even further to the governor that there’s an area of intervention in the educational sector where young girls are taken to polytechnics immediately after their primary education and not taken to secondary school as it should be.

On this, the governor, Issa Timmany was disappointed since most students do not take education seriously and end up getting poor results despite the county government and other non-governmental organizations stepping up and paying for these students’ fees.

However, as a governor that does not stop him from helping these students and stated that he has many other plans for education empowerment in Lamu county.

The governor congratulated LAWA for its commitment in empowering women and girls especially in matters of education and climate Justice.

Mdm Raya concluded by showing her enthusiasm in looking forward to engaging more with the county government in many other thematic areas of LAWA.
