In today’s world, where violent extremism threatens peace and stability, the role of youth in
countering this menace cannot be overstated. Sports, often seen as a platform for entertainment
and fitness, hold untapped potential to be a transformative force in addressing this challenge. Violent extremism often takes root in environments characterized by unemployment, lack of
opportunity, marginalization, and a sense of hopelessness. Young people, who make up a
significant portion of the population in many countries, are particularly vulnerable to recruitment
by extremist groups. These groups prey on their frustrations, offering a sense of belonging,
purpose, or identity.

Through the USAID Sauti program, Lamu women alliance partnered with the county
government of Lamu in engaging with youths in Lamu through the governor’s cup held in With.
This activity brought together youth from diverse backgrounds, fostering teamwork and mutual
understanding. By participating in sports, youth learn to work collaboratively, resolve conflicts
amicably, and appreciate diversity, qualities that directly counter the divisive narratives
promoted by extremist groups.
Through sports, young people acquire critical life skills such as discipline, leadership, goal
setting, and resilience. These skills empower them to navigate challenges, reject negative
influences, and pursue positive paths in life.
For many youth, sports offer a safe space to express themselves, build confidence, and channel
their energy constructively. In communities prone to violence, such safe havens are crucial in
keeping young people away from harmful environments.
Involvement in sports can open doors to education, scholarships, and career opportunities.
These pathways reduce the allure of extremist groups by providing a viable alternative for
achieving personal and economic success.

Across the globe, initiatives combining sports and youth development have shown promising
results. The USAID Sauti program made possible by the help of the American people is
implemented in Lamu by Lamu women alliance to ensure that the drivers of violent
extremism are pointed out and ensure that the society counter such violent extremism. It equips
the society with skills and knowledge to resist negative influences.
Involving youth in sports is a strategic investment in peace and security. By leveraging the
unifying and empowering nature of sports, we can create resilient communities where young
people are equipped to reject violent extremism and embrace a future of hope, opportunity, and
harmony.
